The European Union Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) aims to develop the economic potential and improve the environmental conditions of the region. At the same time, it encourages long-term cooperation, both between local and regional authorities and between authorities, the private sector and NGOs, by generating projects for the development of the region.

The countries included in the Strategy are those covered by the Danube Cooperation Process: Germany (Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria), Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Romania, Bulgaria, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. Of these, eight are Member States of the European Union and the others are involved in various cooperation initiatives with the European Union, some of them with the declared aim of becoming members of the EU in the near or distant future.
